The Torch Singer: Lady Liberty |

The Torch Singer: Lady Liberty Singing just a few minutes past midnight only she could back the darkness into corners. With eyes of fireball blaze, and star gazes of calico she said she inherited all bad winds that blew her way. Even tomorrow was encased in moving mountains inescapable and unconquerable The gravity of the situation pulled her in and mad hatters wore top hats all wrong. This place doesn't know your name and will never ask for it. Torch singers with soot talents and knacks got the applause even before they sang. Milestones of life were delivered in holy notes They each had the sickness - no matter how decayed the audience was she had to get back onstage. The night wound on in tethered dithers and heavy decisions made easier by liquor. When the talking stopped the listening began They gathered her mysteries and one by one they fell into the deep well of her singing trance table by table they fell into the deep well of love and some of lust They all had a chance to consume her, they thought wrongly but she sang until rainbows appeared indoors in the darkest room, in the dirtiest recesses of my Lady's boudoir. It is all so very lonely to be loved so much. Jeff Feezle (c) 03.01.2010 [This message has been edited by threadbear (03-10-2010 04:45 AM).] |

You're very sweet to take time to reply, Jennifurr. It wasn't until this year that I realized something: the United States was the FIRST truly free country in the world! All the others were and had been, ruled by dictators, kings and queens. People came here for a reason, and it was to embracce Lady Liberty. Jeff |

Very well done, Jeff. She is quite a lady, isn't she? Let's hope the US is not the LAST! |

Hey fellow Balladeer! My name on another site long ago was Shanachie (story-teller). You picked up on the thesis of this poem: on what attracted people to this forbidden country in the first place. We knock the USA, but what a glorious place it's turned out to be: always changing, aging a bit, with the Lady always the Vanguard. Thanx, man, for the always kind words. Jeff |

Mr. Bobby, right now You would win! I have a touch of bronchitis. I couldn't blow out the torch of a match, let alone Lady Liberty's flame! (and hopefully, no-one ever will) Jeff |

Dearest Jeff, so lovely and deep in meaning as you always do so well. I remember a trip to The Lady about 15 years ago and how amazing just the site of her is. I hope despite the bronchitis that all is well with the two of you. Last night was the first night I think I have slept more than 2 hours at a time... in three months. Not bronchitis but just as irritating and exhausting. As always, M |

Hi Jeff....She is only a story to me as I have never seen her near, upclose. But her purpose is what we tell ourselves, what we can be, write and how we are able to unfold our life...a magnificant symbol of many. Yes, a lonely place to be. I'm touched by this poem |

A very interesting write my friend. My wife and I went to see her many years ago and we both felt a sense of awe as we gazed upon her. You wrote it well Jeff. Take care. Lindsay |

Hi Martie! Sup, Gal? Your words echo why I wrote this in the first place. Like you, I've never met her in person. But I would like to say that I've touched her physically some day. She is the greatest image in America on what symbolizes the soul of the USA. Jeff |

Hi, Lindsay! Wow, you made the trip from Oz all the way to NY?! I bet you have some cool stories. Maybe you can write your feelings about your visit in some poetry... Jeff |

Thanks so much, Zeitgeist! You are right: my pride was showing a bit. I have this fantasy of being able to take a small dime sized piece of the concrete base, and making it into a necklace somehow. It would remind me to always feel grateful for what God has blessed me with in this country. Jeff |
