Go Unplug Your Television |

Go unplug your television, Constant rain and markets crashing, And the hundredth repetition Of the season’s latest fashions. Go turn off the grim prognosis, And the doctor’s new prescriptions, For depression, runny noses, And your cancers in remission. Go switch off the hottest action, Sex and money, drug addictions, And the search for satisfaction That is full of contradictions. Turn your back on wealthy Christians And their arms of toothless smiles Asking you to fund their mission And those children’s endless trials. Close your ears to regulations Of self-centered politicians That assist big corporations With a friendly disposition. Break away from your attachment - Shark attacks and train collisions, And instead use better judgment, - Go unplug your television. |

I fear we are moving toward being a nation craving to be "entertained" by mind numbing media, from sea to shining sea! More and more now, I listen to good music, read, and especially write poetry. I am very selective about my time spent watching the flat screen. A very savvy, very wise poem. ---Art |

The thing that surprised me about American television was the constant barrage of commercials for prescription medicine. Watching them got the best of the hypochondriac in me as I felt various afflictions attacking me. But to be honest, I don`t feel that television is the number one enemy anymore. Hasn`t the internet become a bigger threat? |

I enjoyed your poem, but I must say, that South African television, as much as everybody criticises it, has so much optimism and good things that are happening from the ground up (along with an awful lot of bad too - I suppose it depends on what rocks one's boat the most, as to the impression we carry away with us, when we do actually turn off the television). Good thoughts here, although I enjoy Christian television and can only hope that most of the money they request goes to the causes they espouse...James |

There is a saying "power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely" Perhaps we should amend it to say limited television educates, unlimited television corrupts. |

Unfortunately, American television is in a dark ages mode now... Far worse than the Internet imho. |

I definitely agree with you...so much of tv is negative and the rest just makes you feel even worse. ( not having cable by choice, my favorite station has become This tv or RTV which shows very old tv shows from the 50's-70's or older movies) Might be my age, but I am tired of all the reality tv shows and the sex and greed of all the others. Was reading this again...my tv stopped working about a month ago and I enjoy listening to classical music on the radio...sooner or later I will buy another tv...hopefully later...I have another thought...ban cell phones from anywhere close to me and especially the text messaging...many seem to be addicted to that process...James |
