Warm mornings, still with a lingering hint of sleepiness
Leading to days of sweltering heat that beads the skin with sweat
A heat that saps the energy, leaves us wanting only a fan and a nap
Clear blue skies that fade to pale blue at times of drought,
Only to come back to true blue after the rain, brief as it is

White clouds that drift, in the afternoons building and swelling until they burst
As they burst, the thunder rumbles and growls, lightning pops and flashes nearby
Then it's over and the air smells of hot pavement as it dries
Crepe myrtles bent low with raindrop soon shake them off and stand upright

The worms that try to cross the driveway, only to shrivel into dried strings
Bumblebees, buzzing me as I go through the doorway, making me duck
Not as fearsome as the wasp, but instinctively, I fear a sting
Late afternoon light begins to fade and the lightning bugs come out
Blinking hello in the dimming light, as the mosquitos whine their complaint

Night, once more sweltering without air conditioning, fans twirling
Crickets, chirping outside and sometimes inside, irk, irk, irk
Cicadas, buzzing in the trees.
Lightning flashes in the distance, teasing us with the thought of rain
I sleep, lulled by the ordinariness of all the sound.

Yes, very well-described.

Perhaps just a little window unit for the bedroom? That's the way we used to do it.

I know those summers... You're spot on with your description.

The closest I have been to the south is Dallas Texas, and then only for a few days, The humidity and the insects, quite frankly, made me pretty miserable. Love the way you discribe it. I guess it's all about what you get used to.
