I know all the truck stops, and those all-night diners,
On every Interstate, in this great land.
I’ve seen most the fairgrounds, and decent arenas.
Just part of the trade of a rodeo man.

Denver’s real pretty, and Cheyenne is ugly.
I get claustrophobic in that Astrodome.
But at least it’s in Texas, and the purses are decent,
And the land of the Lone Star is where I call home.

Seventeen years and some hard miles behind me-
My face is now lined, and my hair mostly gray.
Those gold buckle dreams kept me going too long now-
It’s high time I put my old riggin’ away.

The years were some good ones, with lots of fond mem’ries
I made a few bucks, but that wasn’t the goal.
Life is a gamble, and when it comes your turn-
You pick up the dice and you give them a roll.

Do I regret it? Why, Mister, not any!
I’d do it again, if given the chance.
I ache every winter from all of the hard falls-
The fiddler’s due, for the rodeo dance.

The price you pay for the love of the game!
Probably wouldn't ttrade it for another chance unless you did the same thing over.

I'd say play it in a major key like G with the odd minor chord in the chorus.

Great stuff!

Wish I was still in Oak Cliff . . . Well, maybe not . . . I doubt things would be the same . . . They never are . . . Loved your stuff . . .

When early morning quietness seeps into my being
it's like I'm being hugged by everything good in the world.—August 16, 2010
