Fair to middlin' of nowhere

My Grandmother’s nightgowns came to me
unexpectedly in the early spring.
She gave them away in boxes with other things
from the basement and closets cleaned.
With my fuzzy flannels keeping the cold away,
I didn’t give much thought to that bundle
of sleeveless pastels scented with sachet.
Slowly the nights turned warm and whispered
of my Grandmother’s gowns waiting
soft  as petals for me to pick.
I took the first one, half expecting
it  to be too small or scratchy perhaps.
I never suspected it would be such a delight.
It was soft as a caress to wear.
I slept so sweet that night.
And on the many nights after
each different color I put on.
I marveled at the delicate differences
of lace and hue, ribbons and appliqué.
So simple in their beauty,
are  these lovely gowns
my Grandmother had given me.
I felt special when I wore them
barefooted in the kitchen.
I basked in their understated elegance
and mused on the emotions they brought to me.
My Grandmother’s nightgowns came to me
unexpectedly in the spring.
I celebrated them all summer.

Lovely thoughts of your Grandmother. Lori.
I am sure you came by the gowns for a reason.

Thanks Ida, I know it isn't really the right season for the poem but the holidays bring back memories of her. Lori

The essence of your grandmother in those gowns was part of the wonder of them I have a feeling. What a wonderful thing to bequeath to another, something as personal as a nightgown. That is very touching.

Yes, "the clothes of ages past".  How privileged you are to wear them.  Things were made to last in the old days so I'm sure you'll celebrate more summers with them.

Brought me back to my grandma, thank you. The way she shuffled in her slippers, lucky to have such memories.

Precious memories, dear Lori. Your Grandmother's spirit danced closer to your heart through her nightgowns.

Sweet.

Smiling over the memories of such gifts...
as you well know, these memories can
never be diminished!
