It pains me still to know
that the ghost behind your eyes
and the phantom in your smile
is the maker and the breaker
of a woman's inner feel.

And it's not as if it needed
machine guns, laser beams,
to open up the channel
for love to walk on out
but simply let you be
a free-will human being.

How strong this ghost and phantom
and how determined in intent
to stay as one subservient
to mortal flesh and bone.

And in the fullness of all time
empathetic niceties
and understanding murmurings
will be as hidden treasure
unmarked with a cross ..

but of you in your mortality
I can love you till I die
because once upon a time
you had the eyes and the smile
of a ghost that tried to come alive!

"the ghost behind your eyes...the phantom in your smile.." interesting and original metaphors. I have know this in people. Your poem brings me in touch with something I have never really put into words. Great writing.

Thank you, Bastet.  Maybe it all boils down to the fact that we really aren't who we think we are - we're just ghosts!

Helen, I believe most of us walk around with the ghost and phantom complex (for want of a better word. it's been a long day). Very few people actually shows the world their complete inner self, which is the real you. Well, some do and the mental hospitals are crammed with them. Most of us can handle the ghost and phantom. We have perfected monumental deceit.

Thanks, Jerry.  "monumental deceit" - how right you are and now why does that bring tears to my eyes?

Once more, I am in awe of your ability to write with such feeling and insite. It is always worth the read. I bow to you and yours. Peace.
