There was no internet in those days.
There was the library, the cards files,
And the Dewey Decimal System . . .

I never complained that the system was too slow.
There was no language of gigabytes and crashes,
Just the elegant oaken file cabinets, and a human face

With an official smile, looking up and out
Above the lenses of black, plastic rimmed glasses,
And the ethic of quietness dutifully honored . . .

One day Mr. Beryl, the hunchback
Librarian, looked at me curiously, and said,
Young man, I see a book or two in you . . .

What was it? the gab? my irrepressible tongue?
Or was it the hours and hours spent in the catacombs,
Among Whitman and his brethren . . .

I had a part time job with Mr. Beryl as a repairer of old books, and restoring the titles with a special pen that used indelible ink. Oh, how I remember those hours of solitude in the basement of the library, reading and repairing books among the ghosts who looked over my shoulders, as I would steal a moment to read. I remember discovering Pearl S. Buck, and how it was a new beginning in literature and history, that continues to unfold unto this very day.

Oh dear, how I miss the elegant oaken file cabinets and having to search down in the basement for an old magazine article needed for a research project.  Thank you for reminding me of days gone past.

Nice. It's amazing how the smallest of gestures or words stick to the mind. As a teacher I have to constantly keep that in mind when talking to a student. I think your librarian knew what he was saying.

Thanks for your generous comment, Andrew. It is good to know when there's a teacher in the room---I'll watch my grammar, my deportment, and do my best!

Hi, Art!

The words of learning
are written in lines of experience
upon our faces.

After a time,
I guess we're supposed to get used it.

You definitely know how to hone your craft, my friend,
Jeff

Fine writing, it takes me to the days for libraries, cabinets, log books at the entrance. Vigilant librarian and much more.
