Futility Answered

an:

I know it!

blurted out like a sinus explosion
Heads turned on 25 swivels;
watched a pink face turn to white
who immediately forgot the answer.

He felt dust through the soles of his feet.
He counted every throbbing vein in his cheeks.
He couldn't find a place for his hands.

The teacher waited.
The students waited.
Time stopped everywhere.
His heart beating caused earthquakes
His sighs caused coastal tsunami's.

He started a reply with all the nouns
name dropped without context
stalling for the I GOTCHA shock
to push his mouth into the right words.

stuck
they were

until a kindly soft voice started a whisper with the words
four score and seventy years ago

"  THE GETTYSBURG ADDRESS!  "
his voice sliced silence like a hot laser
"That's what happened on that date
November 19, 1863 by Abraham Lincoln."

He drank in the audience's affection
until he remembered his benefactor
and turned as he sat down, and saw a ginger girl
in a brisk pony tail
crossing and uncrossing her ankles.

She wrote something in pencil upon her desk
and as class was dismissed, he only had to look at it once-
unable to supress an inward smile
memorized the number
then rubbed it out with
the double reinforced cotton
of his sleeve.

It's good to see you, my friend.  Those were the days...well portrayed.  Brought back some of the doubtful of my youth as well as the friendships.

Awwww....Hi Martie!
First and most important: How are you,
and want to wish you and family a Happy
Thanksgiving.
A classic tale of embarassment I think everyone has gone thru at some time or another.
Take care, Martie, I love when your heart speaks thru your words.

So nice to see you Jeff, and of course read your words. I have missed you (both).

Just trying to keep my life on some sort of positive track. Who would have thought that this world would continue to get even more crazy than it was a few years back!

Sending you my love (to share)

Always,
Maureen

A marvelous poem, Jeff; takes me back so vividly to those long ago days of enigma and bewilderment and learning!

Thoroughly enjoyed your poem ---

Thanks, y'all!
What a wonderful treat on this day of/day after Thanksgiving to hear from friends of pen!

Hi, Maur!  Miss you, too, sis.  Would you leave me your phonenumber on my Facebook page? we lost it in the move.  Boat' of us are doing well.  Or should I say: well-worn?

Hi ol' Alison!  Hope you had a great day, and thanks for saying hi.  Stay up on all that poli-stuff, now! LOL

Hi, Kar!  A trip to PIP is never complete without saying Hey to you!  Love your newest poem, by the way.  Thanks for letting
your Sunshine glow!

Hey, Art!  How have you been old buddy?  I think you and I could start our own threads of symbolic poetry some day.  I value your opinion and good wishes very much.

Thanks again, all, for indulging an old man.
