Margo of Mayfield

In the city of the Sultan -
his subjects fear,
despise
and ridicule him.

Putrefied cadavers litter
the land.
Bloated bodies bake
under a midday sun as
corpses swing lazily
in stale air.
The Sultan is neither tidy
nor adverse to shedding
blood.

The Sultan is tattooed
sporadically, artlessly.
Glow worms fornicate
in the red and green ink
that makes up his vulgar
chest.

In a country
poor in fertile land,
the Sultan never
goes to bed hungry.

In his kingdom of dirt,
he met a stranger and traded a cow for a
magic goose.

The goose ruled the gander
gobbling up
herring and kingfish
as other birds watched
and starved.

But no golden egg was forthcoming.

The Sultan defrauded -
killed and
ate the goose

as his subjects snickered.

Ah. Could be some political leanings here. Never mind that, you took on the goose that laid the golden egg quite well, and I and your fans appreciate it. Well done.

That’s what happens when we don’t live upto expectations in all industries. Fine writing, Earl.

I love this kind of poetry! imaginative, inventive, insightful, entertaining, and chocked with not so subtle wisdom. Thoroughly enjoyed the read ---

I love the twist at the end and how it brings in other perspectives all at once. Thanks for sharing this!
