You called me as the thunder rolled,
from New Jersey, dark and cold.
The road had been hard on you today
and you were preparing, in the bed, to lay.

Felt the lonely come trickling through
the phone upon my heart from you,
and I sighed softly so you wouldn't hear
the pain in my heart that caused a tear.

I would've given anything right then
to lay down beside you where I'd been,
where I felt safe and loved and warm,
but we are apart here in this storm.

The money's good but days are long
and I can't keep pretending that I'm strong.
Two weeks is a lifetime, I'm void when you leave-
empty save for the moments I grieve...

and every waking moment, I tend to believe
I bury my pain just to unearth it,
to console the heart I wear on my sleeve,
the money's good but it just ain't worth it.
