Acta Est Fabula it was always disappointing to wrench your hand from the parent`s grip, patter down the heliotrope hallways past the stink and sweat and sawdust and peer from behind sparkled hanging leotards where the clowns, exhausted, lounged mouthing smokes and taking turns at the chipped mirror removing greasepaint from wrinkled skin. How hollow their eyes looked how yellow in the teeth, and how feral the expression when the smile washed away. Once, you stole a glance behind the puppeteer`s drapes, moved the heavy claret velvet aside with one small hand- saw the prop, the sullen stagehands work the strings and levers, saw the lights that, if the angle were correct, could make you cry or scream with laughter. You were angry, then- for manipulation, easy as breathing and for what could never be the same. . . You grew and changed, but still that snicking sound of the marionette behind you, following- it`s constant grin a terminal reminder how the fantasy always supercedes; reality a dip in stagnant water cold, and rearranging to the senses |

Quite vivid and emotional, like one of those clowns with questionable intenions. I like how you can write about any given subject and do it with such flair. Well done, good poetess~ |

I don't like clowns but I liked your poem and how you portrayed what goes on behind the curtain. Kat >^..^< |

Thanks, Kat! Yes, for sure those with a clown phobia (can`t recall the term) will not like this poem... =p haha . Speaking to what lies beneath the glamour of life, I suppose.. . Thanks again! Best~ Amaryllis |

As a child I didn't like clowns, they scared me and I still don't like them much but I simply love this poem. It really catches the essence of how I feel about them. Ida |

Wonderfully done! We can all relate to a time when we "learned the truth" about something and it changed us a little more into "grown ups". ebm |

...all the facades come off, often rending effects that make or break the meaning of performance. The imagery is powerful and the writing emotive. Terrific rendition staging the layers of the clown.... Brilliant writing. Karen |

This is the second time today that I read about puppeteers and the reality behind the scenes ... the first one in a book of travel memories by Marguerite Yourcenar and now you here. Both works are exceptional works! Clowns usually are melancholic people in their private lives, they gift their public with laughter, but seem to have no one that brings laughter to them. You write and never fail to touch this reader with the beauty and depth of your words. Love, Margherita |

What a great write this is! You have taken the the thought that Fantasy is much better than reality and woven it into the perfect scenario to illustrate that point. As Alfred E. Neumann used to say, "Reality is for people who can't face fantasy." |

Nicely composed, this. A Wizard of Oz vibe on the trip down the corridor, and I suspect a bit of a sad and smallish travelling show? Perhaps the only folks who can get up for those roles every day or night are amateur theater volunteers (or the paid part-timers who choose such work). |

Thank you so much, all above... I am so humbled. Your words mean a lot to me. . Easy1~ thanks, and you know, I suppose I didn`t give in-depth thought to exactly what type of troupe my characters belong to, since they are cut-outs designed to stay where I`ve glued them and contribute to a greater mosaic . My best to all~ Amaryllis |

Amaryllis, you weave magic, then with one fell swoop you wipe it away to reveal . . . magic! |

Thank you for the explanation. The light begins to dawn... and, yeah, an awful lot of that sort of manipulation does go on. I like the analogy, or is it metaphor, that you crafted here. How could we know the circus train from the fog, until it slinks by? |
