She languished for awhile then slipped away;
Not many mourned her loss that fearsome day
For she was old and worthless, so it seemed
An inconvenient relic, many deemed.

They failed to glimpse the glory of her youth;
Professing wisdom, they demeaned her truth:
Fierce subjugation’s shackles fast enslave,
Denying liberties that God’s hand gave.

A requiem was sung by just the few
Who cherished her protections and who knew
The sacrifice of those who gave her breath
Who'd pledged their loyalty unto the death.

Revive again that spirit we have lost;
Rekindle freedom’s flame, what ‘ere the cost.

“Public virtue cannot exist in a Nation without private Virtue, and public Virtue is the only Foundation of Republics.”
(John Adams, 1775)

Thanks for reading and for your feedback, Amayrillis, Passing Shadows, and easy1. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I decided one day to sit down and write a poem again. I used to churn out several a week, and then all of a sudden....nothing.
This is my latest, that I finished last night. I started it almost 2 years ago!
It's a good thing I kept my day job!

Thanks again, everybody!

nicely done~~ I promised myself as I aged that I wouldn't sound like my parents and elders saying "I rememember when..." as certain changes in our society seem to be going down the wrong paths.

Thanks for your lovely words, ladies!

lol...sometimes I guess we can't help sounding like our parents, Maureen! Somehow the older we get the smarter they get! How do they do that?
