Sixty’s waiting just around the corner…
Thirty, half a lifetime in the past:
I’ve learned to savor every gasp of living,
And try to treat each one like it’s the last.

The rodeo exists in faded memories-
My health and “try” have vanished with the years,
I wouldn’t take a million for the roads that I have seen-
And the pleasure they provided, oft interspersed with tears.

I never thought I’d reach the age of fifty-
Thirty even caused a lot of doubt…
There are an awful lot of things that I’d do differently this time…
And some things I bought too dearly, that I could do without.

I treasure every breath that I am given,
And pass along each lesson that I’ve learned;
But, sadly, I see my advice unheeded…
And youngsters burning bridges I once burned.

So “live and learn” go hand in hand together-
And lessoned taught by history are spurned:
So give each day your all, you are riding for a fall-
And butter only comes from cream that’s churned.

This is a serious subject, which makes the last line here so forced as to be lol good. I am not sure if "lessoned" is an intentional blend of lessons and lessened, but it fits well in place.

A nice piece.  As for young people making mistakes and refusing to take advice from their elders, hasn`t it always been so?  As my father says this is their time and their time for change - for the good or the better.

I have so been there.  Both doing the burning and doing the warning.  Very nice piece.

The rare youth it is that takes advice from the experienced. Oh, the pains they would avoid if heeded.

Enjoyed!
