I spent the night outside of Eureka Springs
In a little place that was clean and quiet
Not bent on advertising heart shaped Jacuzzis for two
Or tours of the town by carriage ride
Then picked up 23 and headed south through the hills
Planning to make the wide circle back to pick up the trailer
Maybe haul a few head for old man Rogers
and put away a few dollars to tide me by

Highway 23 winds in a long lonesome path
Through the pine and oak in such a way as to give a man
Time to think about the things that weigh on him
Or to just watch the hills with their many shades of green
And broken greys of outcrops where the earth grows
Nothing but stone

I was in a thinking mood

So the scenery registered as half images and I listened to the drone
Of tires on asphalt join the rattle of thoughts I had about
How I’d found this part of the country beautiful
When I used to wake up to her smiling at me
Just before she wrapped her leg over mine and put her lips
To the hollow of my throat sighing a soft entreaty
That I get up and build the fire so the room would warm
Then come back to her promise of making it
Worth my while to pass a few more minutes of morning
Wrapped in the warmth of her

The country
And the scenery still holds the beauty of early morning’s sun
And low clouds of fog that covers tops of steep sided hills
Leaving one disconnected from a larger view of what lies ahead

The tar strips in the road
still play a rhythmic thump
To accompany the music of passing miles

And me?
I still think of how it was to wake up cradled in the hills
And the love
                    We shared
In that once upon a time

Sounds like quite a dog you had there...and like she was a bit spoiled..
appreciate your looking in on these sir.
Mere ramblings of story that is leading somewhere, or supposed to be... we'll see if it makes it or not.
Might be a reason the Saturday Evening Post isn't seen these days, so the or not part of my statement may be the one to root for..

thanks for the eyes amigo... and the shared words.
