Under a looming hillock, i nestled into a dugout,
the screams and hearty roars of gunfire about.

I waited patiently, for my comrade to say-
just how many krouts he had killed today.

I waited for him hour after hour.
I held on, i did not cower.

And when he returned, he was not the same.
Wounded and disfigured, mortar was to blame.

He collaspsed and profusely blead;
into my arms, as i secured his head.

He coughed twice, and whispered in my ear.
A message for his wife, so painfully clear.

And exhaustedly, rasped his last advice.
He coughed and spluttered, need not to say twice.

Whilst men have greed, power and lust in their heart.
Violence will continue, war will once more start.

As the light drew from his eyes, he so fervently said:
Leave, brother, may your blood not be shed.
