She walks into the house, her thoughts on all the day's worries
But something makes her pause, listening, as something scurries
"A mouse" she thinks, "I need some traps." and so she climbs the stairs
But shadows move across the floors and whispers fill the air

She changes clothes and goes downstairs, ready for something to eat
Somehow the kitchen seems unusually dark, again the sound of little feet
She writes a note "mousetraps" on the grocery list and opens the cupboard door
The shadows behind her shift and flow across the floor

As the shadows close, she feels the cold and suddenly has to shiver
She turns to look, there's nothing there, yet still her nerves quiver
The shadow now is close behind, she cannot turn fast enough to see
Yet still she knows, something isn't right, wonders if she should flee

She grabs her snack, and then a drink and heads to the second floor
Her shadow clings, almost touching her skin, and then there are two more
Two other shadows that creep up the stairs, following the other's lead
Now three shadows are stalking, closing in, as she settles down to read

Again she shivers, why is she so cold? she wonders as she readies for bed
The room seems dim, the lights are all on, it all just in her head
She closes her eyes, drifts off to sleep and the shadows close in on their prey
The house is silent, still and now there is a faint sound that quickly fades away

The sun comes up, she comes downstairs, all dressed and ready for work
But something has changed, she's not the same, in her eyes something lurks
She smiles as usual, but everyone who passes her shivers and wonders why
If they would only look closely, they would see the shadows behind her eyes.

I don't usually do well with rhymes, but I tried anyway.
