We Are Sisters

Worn out pictures dim with age
Finger prints smear every page
Watermarked from tears that fell
Each has its own tale to tell

Hearts once broken tried to heal
Splintered, ruptured could not feel
Time has dimmed his eyes, once bright
But could not touch his inner light

Like a bomb, we exploded
Shocked by pain that imploded
A family ripped apart
By the pain of shattered hearts

We fought, we cried far too long
Each of us tried to be strong
Schisms grew beyond repair
Acting like we did not care

Blood has fallen, lines were drawn
While we dueled ‘til early dawn
Cutting, going for the win
Each year starting once again

Now we’ve opened up our eyes
Brushed our tears and stilled our cries
In our hearts, we bleed for you
But have learned what we must do

Set aside our fighting days
Let the future pave our way
Share the times we were apart
Allow ourselves a new start

Let us heal with each new day
Holding tight we’ll find the way
We are sisters, hand in hand
Bruised but still we form a band

Each new day opens a page
Smothers a once burning rage
Pictures bring us love again
Telling stories that have no end

He is gone, brother and son
Through our strength, he’ll live on
And today we touch his face
In this band, he has his place

Worn out pictures dim with age
Finger prints smear every page
Watermarked from tears that fell
Each has its own tale to tell

Alison, my sister was 7 years older than me and very talented but for some reason she was always insecure around me, picking on me so much that I eventually just hardened to it all rather than not be a part of her family and my nephews. But knowing her childhood background before I came along, I tried my best to do things with her and let her have her way. She is no longer with us and if I could I would endure her insecurities if only she was still here.

Maureen,

Thank you. I think of the most complex relationships is between sisters.  I have three older sisters and had an older brother.  When he died, we just fractured - choosing sides, not talking, backbiting.  It crashed in a year ago when my eldest sister and I had a major falling out.  For the first time in years, all four of us are communicating with each other at the same time.  We are taking baby steps, but all of want this to work.

I am so happy that you and your sister are trying to mend things, Alison. I have no sisters but sure wish I did.

Dixie,

It was sad.  It's not so much now.  We miss our brother  -  but, we know what we were doing was hurting us all.  I got old pictures and have been scanning them and posting them for my sisters to see. It is bringing us together as we comment on them and remmember better days.  Now, I think we all look forward to growing as friends.

Thank you.

Dear Alison, life has so many sad times but as we age walls fall and hope appears in the distance, we wonder why things happen and try to heal the wounds before they become too infected, keep working your way through life Alison, it is not an easy road to travel but one we all must walk in our way.

Take care.
A good read, thanks for sharing.

Thank you, Rick.  I love how you write poetic stories of life. You inspire me to reach inside myself.  Life is not always easy, but sometimes the rewards make the difficulties worth it.

Again, my thanks.

Harsh words from family are often the hardest to forgive and forget.  I'm glad you are working out your problems, there are times when family is all we have.

Very, very good...BOTH, the writing, and renewal of relations.

I applaud you for both.

And hope things pan out the way you'd like.

Once upon a time
a mother looked upon her brood
during their daily childish
squabbles.

She sat them all down
and sincerely, seriously looked
from one to the other.

"When your father and I are gone
all you will have, is one another."

I remember that every day.

Even when I don't hear from
my remaining sibling. But, it
is her choice.

Z, I wish I had a sister like you. Hopefully I can BE a sister like you to my two little sisters who are 12 and 9.
