Sunday in June |

The air is warm with wood scent, lemon and linseed oil, perfumed by Sunday bodies cotton-pressed, smartly dressed- short sleeves and shining brows in the eye of June. . The congregation shifts, torpid in the heavy summer steam, the sermon lengthy, in rich baritone, with outdoor songbird sweet accompaniment. . Four-oclock sun slants from the rafters, gilds the honeyed altar, sings down upon the waiting clergy, as if they somehow planned it, this gloried spotlighting. . Outside, the Cherry nods, the bumblebee mutters to himself around the azalea, the red-tail hawk scrolls scrimshaw in the sky, heedless of the prayers below his wings. . My oldest boy, not quite thirteen sits near, yet far enough to stretch his individuality- he does not know I see how his eye obeys the blushing pull of the pretty brunette across the aisle. . My youngest wears his seven years so lightly I half-believe he is my baby still- sits beside me, drawing trucks and tanks intent, engrossed with everything, with now. . That evening, I can`t recall which scripture read- which uplifting words I should have kept, because I saw a sermon in the miracle of moments, in the small but infinite daily parables. |

Amaryllis... You have a marvelous touch at inviting the reader to sit right beside you. Excellent work, m'dear. |

My oldest boy, not quite thirteen sits near, yet far enough to stretch his individuality- he does not know I see how his eye obeys the blushing pull of the pretty brunette across the aisle. I love this. And I agree with Sunshine, you pull the reader into your poems, and take us with you, into your world, and through your eyes. Amazing. |

Absolutely nothing boring about this poem! You blend in so many things together, so many stories, so many visions one absorbs the atmosphere as one absorbs the smell of a fine wine. It's a wonderful piece of writing and a beautiful snapshot of daily life.....very impressive! ![]() |

A very nicely well-drawn picture, and interesting for what was noted and what was omitted here. Except for the later hour, I almost believe I have been there, too. |

Your descriptions of your sons was really quite detailed and I could imagine that I was sitting across from them. Thanks for sharing a moment in time. This is like a photograph. |

I am an official fan. I felt it, smelled it, danced it--the only thing I couldn't relate to was the nodding cherry. (But that's just my prob, eh? ![]() ![]() I smelled starch, somewhere as well. Fabulous. |

Many, many thanks to all above, for your kind words! ![]() . And Serenity.. I suppose you already know but I meant the nodding ornamental cherry trees, in the light wind.. maybe you don`t have many of them in the south? I`m not sure what trees are indigenous to the N.W or not, heh ![]() . Best~Amaryllis |
