I know it is easy to tell someone what to do in
these situations. But I have first-hand knowledge
on my side. October, 2010 I made peace with
my demons by forgiving myself to things I never
thought I could. Someday, I hope the person I am
writing about will find that place of self-forgiveness.

Darkness flows though you and I understand,
Unlike you I have conquered my darkness,
I comprehend your anguish in your abyss,
And I don't attempt to make it sound bland.
Valleys of the past return to haunt you,
Disrupting your good life and causing pain,
You wonder if it will always be your bane,
And can you never be rid of the blues.
The dark days come to you without warning,
You fight this your way by hunkering down,
And that causes your goddess eyes to frown,
What you go through is a dastardly thing.

I give you these words to take as you will,
You must forgive yourself and tears you spill.

Sadly...it is a real and prevalent maxim of the human spirit (perverse as it is) to seek comfort in those dark places...so many people find comfort in that place...and can only function in that kind of emotional misery...certainly, the poem has a lot I can relate to...

and more sadly...no one else can ever set that person free...

great read, Mr. Pat~*~

Thank you Baby Girl. It is difficult to say the least to climb out of that darkness. I did it, but it took many years (decades). It is just too convenient a place to hide sometimes. Appreciate you being here . . .

Wonderful title, Jerry, and you treated this delicate topic with great sensitivity and wisdom.

Forgiveness (forgiving others and ourselves) is the key to inner peace and serenity and the only way to let go of the past, to expand in our full largeness and beauty towards the future.

I much enjoyed and appreciated your poem. Great work ... and I am sure the person will understand.

Margherita, for decades people kept telling me that to be really free from my past I had to forgive myself. I though, what poppycock. Until the day the understanding came to me and I did forgive myself. I still think about the past and I am still sorry for my part in certain things, but no longer do I blame myself. I am not the same person I was back then. Why then should I carry all the blame, guilt, and sorrow? I shouldn't, and I got rid of it. I understand now. Wish I could have understood much sooner. Thank you for always showing up, Margherita and gracing my page with your presence.
