Listening to every heart

0 posted 2012-01-08 09:29 PM

Melancholia

It was as if a blue shroud embraced
my shoulders, sorrow filling this heart
upon hearing of the passing ~ a younger soul
blood by birth
but as if in time gone by, hearing of her
only months later.

As a child beside the child, remembering
blonde sweetness, lovely features,
calmness and light, purity, essence’s oil,
a candle of  calm brilliance,
and Melody was her name.

When the news was received, the season left me,
for Christmas news is not meant to carry grief,
nay, but when it does, odd things happen.
Putting aside the letter, I did not send out
my own, nor cards, but instead, listened to others
talk of His coming, and found solace.

Tonight, upon reading the letter yet again,
realizing that Melody gave of her eyes…
the gain that others would know, then and only then
did I pen a letter to her mother, a cousin by love,
that perhaps later, the knowledge that her child’s name
might live

as a melody in and of itself, as if a deaf person might
hear, if they could but see; or a child know, if he
but might read; or an octogenarian, if the gift
were to lessen the macular eclipse…

and slowly, slowly, melancholia realized, as
a melody of love was displayed, that it does not belong
here, any more, within this
poem.

Tomorrow, a world will see.

This is one heartfelt piece of poetry, my friend. I felt passion within each line I read. The hesitation of writing condolences until later, when you had allowed everything to sink in was a wise decision, and one made where others not so wise, would not have made.

I'm saving this one.

"It was as if a blue shroud embraced
my shoulders, sorrow filling this heart"

In my belief, that shroud will be
lifted by the hand of the Lord
in the resurrection.
There will be peace and joy.
Blessings to you and your family.

I am so thankful for the way you "see" as well.  Such a sense of gratitude to that child and her parents, although I know they must be devastated. Angels to keep them, Sunshine.

This poem is like a sad but very beautiful "Melody", Sunshine.

K., this is powerful and deeply reflective.  Kind of reminds me of the loss of my father, and the role my son took in turning that sadness into something brighter.  A joy founded in sorrow, if that makes any sense at all.  Enjoyed the read... and the pondering.

I am extremely humbled by all of your replies, and I thank you so much.

Words carry. They strive to find a moment to cement love into an abyss of suffering. Only if words hit a memory, do they live.

Thank you!

I really don't know if I can convey how deeply I feel this poem, Karilea.  I hope you know.

I think of you.

Putting aside the letter, I did not send out
my own, nor cards, but instead, listened to others
talk of His coming, and found solace.

And when you did write, you were able to share that solace instead of simply reacting to the pain... and if anything brings comfort to one who's grieving, it's knowing that the lost life mattered, made a difference and will be remembered. This is lovely... as is your compassionate heart. *S*
