Through Wintry Footprints

Though the path is worn and old
and dreamy vine clutters evergreen bold.
I will not abandon that way
despite the weeds
and mossy mold…

For though a short while
I was with you
your love pressed into
and conquered my lonely-wounded soul…

And still, to this wintry day, I am fascinated by your smile
your thoughtfulness and passion in life,
your adoring expression in love
and insistent stance for kindness…

What I ask, what did you perceive
in me, and why would you have embraced
such a fool as I?
A con lurking about the days,
for sweetness such as you…

Me, idly peddling hours as trade
behind fully closed curtains
hiding the man with classless dreams of inventory
for my own fantasies…

Yet my heart knew
and its pleadings I ignored, I fell.
I would not regard your love
although I knew it was there
and I knew it was you…

Oh dear heart, if I could hold you,
just once more.
One more time,
wrapping my arms
around you
holding you tight,
I know
I would not be here…

If I could only hear you whisper
once more, you loved me,
I would not be here
on this cold winters evening,
walking this pathway,
thinking of you,
and retracing
frozen footprints
in the snow…

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. Love your neighbor as yourself.
Maranatha!

Dear JL, you bare your heart in this poignant write, it is beautifully written, it holds melancholy, with a touch of bitterness, but hope too seems to have its rightful place, next to the everpresent feeling of love.

So plaintive and so beautiful.  Makes me want to walk along with you and just be on that path.

JL, you sound like someone I know quite well in this poem, moi! We, I have discovered with no help for the great quote, are out own worst enemies.

You have two choices in life:
You can stay single and be miserable,
or get married and wish you were dead.

I read poems like this, and although I know it's true...I think of:

"I hold it true, whate'er befall;
I feel it, when I sorrow most;
'Tis better to have loved and lost
Than never to have loved at all."

And I kind of want to sock Sir Tennyson square in the mouth, for thinking it up.  haha

I said one time you should post more, but when you do, you don't pull any punches.  This hurts my heart, JL.  I love this:

"For though a short while
I was with you
your love pressed into
and conquered my lonely-wounded soul…"

Bittersweet and beautiful

Nicole – Thank you for your reply.
Alfred Tennyson would probably chuckle
at your reply and say that this is no tale as his:
Sir Lancelot and Queen Guinevere, his
“maiden spring upon the plain.”

Thank you!!  It’s always nice to get a reply from you!!

Lori – You always have something so nice to say.  Thank you!
Sorry for the misted eyes.

This literally brought tears to my eyes. I wrote a poem not so very long ago about a lonely walk of missing, but after reading this, I'm glad I never posted those lines, for they lack the beautiful heartsqueeze that these give... You write the ache of longing so poignantly that even someone who's never known loss would feel a twinge... and those of us who know just want to hug you and sog your shoulders with our tears.

Ruth, you sure know how to make someone
feel special.  I thought a way to a man’s heart
was through his stomach?
Please post that poem of yours ‘about a lonely
walk of missing‘  I bet it’s beautiful!!
Thanks for your kind reply.

My friend, I can assure you that tummy thing is myth... or maybe it's just me. *S* But... you asked, you receive, you see I spoke the truth! LOL

walk

Walk with me in winter’s wood
Telling me the things we would
Be for each other if we could
Be anything at all

Let me hear your dearest dream
Never fearing it will seem
A fantasy that’s too extreme
Or hope that is too small

In murmured conversations
We’ll share our aspirations
Pretending that limitations
Simply do not exist

Matching steps and clasping hands
Away from all life’s demands
The looks we're sharing with our plans
Are intimate as kiss

Bare limbs bleak against the sky
Cry of geese somewhere up high
Pierce fantasy. Suddenly I
Am out here on my own

Smiles and sharing? Just pretend
There is no one in attend
And loneliness will never end
Forever, I'm alone

This is a powerful piece, JL, cutting into the similiar path I tread.  I was moved deeply with this one.
