Understanding

In stolid retribution, hate,
Often as not mistook for fate,
Lingers long on the peering eyes
That rip to shreds this grim disguise.
That I could stand amongst you all,
My only wish, in lieu the fall
Of everything I once believed –
If only by myself, deceived.

By destiny stood I, before her…
By God, how could I help adore her?
By the very sorrow-tinged skies
Under which live her haunting cries…
Forever, I now limp the land,
Reprisal’s bane, borne as a brand.
Bearing in mark the crimson stain
Upon a heart that loves in vain…

But harrows every long lost deed,
To lay to rest – as I still bleed –
A timeless moment, past all warning,
I walk endlessly in mourning.
My only wish – my only curse…
(The soul, long dead, living in verse)…
To sing, by every feral moan
Of what I must carry – alone!

And if by silence I am met…
I will sing louder – louder yet!
Till every ear leads one to cringe –
Till all is stripped finally from fringe…
As, in the ashes, windswept – whining,
Comes to life that silver lining…
Understanding, upon the eye
Before which, in peace, I shall die.

Michael Anderson

But dreams — of those who dream as I,
Aspiringly, are damned, and die

I first copied one verse and then another... With every read, my focus changes but one truth remains... This is compelling, poignant, powerful perfection.

I don't have anything wonderfully profound to say, Michael.  I'm sure everyone will be able to grace you with the replies you deserve, I'm just at lack for words.

All I can say, really,  is that this one actually moved me to tears.

Michael,
Your poem gripped my heart, squeezed it hard, then threw it into the wind, I want it back! ms. e

Ruth, that’s quite a compliment.  Thank you.

Nicole, it would be hard for me to imagine someone’s words being more appropriate than knowing I actually moved you to tears…  That a person “feel” what you are writing is the very need that drives the poet.  I am honored that you felt this one.

M, I am glad you’re enjoying them.

Ms e., The wind blew off with mine ages ago… at least they have each other’s company now.
