I hadn’t heard about his Alz!  Sad, but glad I got to meet him and have signed albums.

For The "Goodtime" Man

You said, "Try A Little Kindness"
And then, you went "All The Way"
You have been on "Both Sides, Now"
And, "On The Dock Of The Bay"
You've chased the "Elusive Butterfly"
And said, "It's Only Make Believe"
You said, "I Don't Believe You"
And had, "Reason To Believe"
You said "I Wanna Live" "My way"
And did it "Once More With Feeling"
While saying "That's All That Matters"
"And The World Keeps Spinning"
You've crossed a "Bridge Over Troubled Water"
To the shores of "Galveston"
Walked around "MacArthur Park"
Crying out, "Hey, Little One."
You said, "Turn It Around In Your Mind"
"Pave Your Way Into Tomorrow"
And, "Take My Hand For Awhile"
"Until It's Time For You To Go"
You asked, "Where's The Playground Susie?"
Spoke of "Words" and "Friends" and "Ann"
"Dreams Of The Everyday Housewife"
And even, the "Fate Of Man"
You said, "Woman, Woman", "If This Is Love"
Then, "Love Is Not A Game"
And said, "For My Woman's Love"
I would go "Home Again"
You said, it will "Break My Mind
"If You Go Away"
"Honey Come Back", please "Take me Back"
"Gotta Have Tenderness", "Today"
You said, "That's All That Matters"
"Turn Around And Look At Me"
And if, "It's Over", "All The Way"
Please, "Dream Sweet Dreams About Me"
"By The Time I Get To Phoenix"
Like that "Witchita Lineman" kind
We'll be "Friends", "As Far As I'm Concerned"
And you'll be "Gentle On My Mind"
These are just a few of the titles
Of all the songs that you sing
And there are a million memories
Of "Goodtime Hours" (and bad) they bring.
More than all, those of old "Galveston"
Where we lived the sailor's life
Me, a hard, coldhearted man
And a lovely, loving wife
We lived 'board the "Afrikan Queen"
Worked night and day upon that boat
But, I found it the wrong thing
To try, to keep, afloat
I should have looked, inside my heart
To find the words to speak
For, when I found them, 'twas too late
To touch her heart and stop the leak
So, I've been writing, since that time
To find the right key word
Or a way to tell her of my love
She's not already heard
I wrote two books of poetry
And found it was hard to sell
And thought maybe a song or two
Might be the road from this hell
I know that I can write "the words"
About as well as anyone
And I'd give anything to share them
Before my life is done
You see, those words are everything
All the meaning, to my life
For they have to take the place
Of friend, lover, and wife
They're all there is to soothe my pain
They have to warm me when I'm cold
Keep me company when I'm lonely
Be there to count on when I'm old
They have to be there in the morning
And when I lay me down to sleep
And though, they are only words
They're all I have, my soul to keep
But I would trade all I have written
For a chance to share my love
And for, three words, "I forgive you"
From her, and God above
But, 'seems I'll take them to the grave
And like me, they'll be unknown
'Seems such a waste of what's inside
That, I dared let, be shown.

Abe, thank you so much for this beautiful
tribute to an ultimate star who made time
for all of the rest of us to resonate with
his soul in a world where so much seemed to
be in peril.

I had a cousin who resembled Wichita Line Man because that was his job. Only
it was in California.

Glen had a smile that took one in, still does.

That he and his wife made his diagnosis
public is a very brave thing to do, especially
if he is going to continue touring for as
long as he can.

His audiences will be there for him.

JL,
Have 2 pieces etched on Ellis County Veterans Memorial in Waxahachie, if you are near there.  A beautiful Memorial.  I spoke at dedication on Veterans Day, 2000

Del,
I am quite a ways away from there.
I have never visited but I know where it is.  I was going to DC to visit that memorial, but backed out.  I have several friends whose names are inscribed there.

"ERNIE PYLE, who was killed on April 18, 1945 on le Shima, a small flat island three miles west of Okinawa in the East China Sea, wrote, "'I guess it doesn't make any difference, once a man has gone. Medals and speeches and victories are nothing to them any more. They died and others lived and nobody knows why it is so.'"
From the memorial at Waxahachie.
