Just as babies cannot stay in the womb
Our lives keep changing from cradle to tomb
We discover shelters, stay for a while,
Some days we shed tears, others wear a smile

We build sanctums from cares, havens from strife
If lucky, we make friends we keep for life
Years might be shared in a common workplace
With memories made that time can’t erase

Eventually, we’ll stand in a door
And know that we’ve a new world to explore
For though there are joys we must leave behind
Hopes and dreams are waiting for us to find

Now the time has come when our ways must part
But thoughts of you will be kept in my heart
And I'll be wishing God’s blessings on you
Wherever you go, whatever you do

I remember Ursula, the Sea Witch on the Little Mermaid saying, "One musn't linger in doorways..."  and yet it's so hard not to sometimes.  Not that Ursula demands devout and strict adherence, mind you, but life does seemt to be about doors, as your poem illustrates quite well.  Mayhap it's time to get my butt out of this one.

Sunshine: Thank you so much! *S* I'm not sure about the "keeper" designation, though. *S* I originally wrote it for someone being forced into an early retirement... then rewrote it a month or so ago for a lady who was finally taking a break at 78! *S* Given time and more departures, it may go through more revisions... but I'm glad you like this version! *S*

Lori: Thank you so much! *S*

DS: Darn!!! You edited out the great laugh you'd given me! *S* But I thank you most sincerely for both responses!!!

ebonygirl: Thank you! *S* Many years ago, I considered this lady an aggravation... she became a dear friend. *S*

JerryPat: Thank you very much! *S*

Michael: Ursula would be greatly disappointed in me for I try to wedge myself as firmly as possible in those doorways... stepping through is a scary process and I'm not a brave soul. *S* But I'm great at shoving others through... let me know if you need a push... I'll lace my boots! LOL Thank you so much!

Alison: Thank you for reading, dear friend... Your kind comments are most appreciated!

I would love to retire early and get on with painting, which is my first love. Responsibility though never lets us follow anything we love truly. Fine writing this.

Prasad: How well I understand! *S* I work to pay the bills and there never seems to be enough time for the things I want to be doing. *S* Sometimes I fear my "retirement" will be rolling from my cubicle to the cemetery. LOL Thank you so very much! *S*

do we ever really retire...

I look at that word differently as  to
re tire ( replace) your wheels and get a new start on life...

happy to be reading you again

Only wish I was the one standing inside saying goodby...mine not by choice (layoff 18 months ago), but then, someone has to hire you again. This was a very apt and wonderful write.

Suthern, my friend, what "scribblings" of yours I don't see in print, I linger over in memory - again, and again.

suthern - Growth is ordained for all Life. Sometimes we just forget at what age we stop growing and start dying. Perhaps retirement is an interim opportunity to reverse the process to which others succumb. I most enjoyed this suthern. It'll have you thinking. Thanks. Namyh

Your approach to the delicate moment of "retirement" is very beautiful, dear Ruth. I have stepped through that door with mixed feelings, but also with the eagerness to live new experiences and to continue to cultivate the bonds of friendship created through the years ... as I do.

Love,

I thought I had replied to this, and in enjoying it again, I discovered that I hadn't.

What a beautiful Ruth-send-off your friend received!  You are such a kind and compassionate person.  How blessed your friend was to have you as a colleague.

Like you, Ruth, I will have to work until I drop very dead!  Smiles.

What a lovely wish for someone who goes through the door of the unknown and I am sure with some trepidation.  I wish someone would guide back through that door, as I had more time to get things done with I worked!

Beautifully done, with a typical Suthern heart showing.
