...In the Belfry Trouble sleeping once again a visitor but not a friend with wings spread wide and dipping near a childhood memory brings on the fear... Waiting now each morning's rise returning home want no surprise just hoping it has found an out so calm returns with little doubt... Some day they'll see this isn't a home where they are wanted to freedom roam to leave in peace a memory of old releasing thoughts left uncontrolled! Came to think of a bat. This is very powerfully expressed, dear Maureen. Childhood memories can be very haunting indeed. (as for me I look at the bat as a friend because they keep my enemy number one in check by swallowing tons of them ... mosquitos ) Love, Margherita |

Enjoyed your poem, Maureen. Send your little bats to me. I will welcome thwm warmly and they will be out of your way. I am sure they will love the South African weather, especially in Durban. Tell them they have no need to fear me, because though a bird of prey, I don't feed on my friends. Perhaps they could come by ship as crossing the Atlantic Ocean could be frightening for little darlings that don't normally migrate, especially not over the sea. Owl |

You are welcome to my bi-yearly visitors who make a mistake and think they can survive in here. I don't mind them as long as they don't come soaring over my head thinking they are out of doors. Sighing~~ still haven't found it whether alive or dead...making each evening's stay uncomfortable for now. M |

Dear Maureen, as they go hunting in the evening, they should find the window wide open with a light outside that beckons. You have probably tried that already. I know it is not funny when they race over the head ... I once heard that if they land upon our hair, it's difficult to free them, as they get frantic ... uhhhh, wouldn't want that either! Good luck! |

Margherita, thank you for that comment...about the hair...uggg! that is the childhood memory I have and it took me a very long time to not sleep with covers over my head...which I will probably be doing tonight since I will try staying here and have one more room to go through and see if I can find any evidence of it tomorrow. Thanks everyone for the replies....I have never been fond of bats but I also don't sleep too well when not in my own bed . ~yawning~ M |

I understand your uneasiness, dear Maureen. May you be able to restore tranquility quickly and sleep well in your own bed! Love and hugs. Margherita |

Like lovely Margherita, I'm a fan of the bat. But it's a great image for those thoughts that seem to swoop and dive at us in our heads while we're trying to sleep. (Even if this is about actual bats, I maintain it's still an excellent metaphor.) Echo-ambulatory creatures, they are. Amazing really, and once that aspect is appreciated about them they seem to take on more grace and direction. Love ya, Mo. *smoochies* |

Dear JL, for once I must say that you are wrong! WE NEED THEM ... so maybe it would be good if they could be appreciated and loved. Excerpt from an article on bats: "Bats are the only major predators of night flying insects. Fruit eating bats are important for seed dispersal, and literally thousands of our economically important plants depend on nectar feeding bats for pollination of their flowers. Guano from bats continues to be a major fertilizer in many countries. " Dear Maureen, I hope you sleep serenely these nights! Love to both, Margherita |
