~~~ A lonely railway station A pale moon striking yard A haggard washed out Hobo hugs the life's work of a bard A far off distant whistle A fast approaching train In crackling flames of open fire at embers he stares in pain While twilight's eerie haze reflects the twin of setting sun The leaping flames suppress the need of basking in the fun A headlight's gleam cascading A sadness through mournful wail The slow approach perpetual in the cadence of wheel and rail The old 600 rambles in as steam from ballast blows And brings with it a gentle rain that soaks right through his clothes Conductor shouting ... "A L L A B O A R D" as hearth ignites his notes He climbs aboard the train of thought While a fading thunder strokes ~~~ |
You took me there, and made me look back and wonder about what lies beyond the horizon. Fabulous scenery while conjuring up all those places our minds travel too. Really good reading, Mr. McCoy~ |
Did my share of traveling this great land in the sixties and seventies, but never hopped a freight. We called those guy Dirty Faces. I have wandered into a couple of hobo jungles however and drank some of their wine with them. Nice work. Born Free........Taxed to Death |
Wow. I can feel the loneliness and melancholy in this one right down to the bone. Good writing. Ida |
Seems a shame doesn't it that atmosphere is gone these days? There was always something magical about it all. Train, the steam, conductor, the adventure although much simpler than it is now days much more heartfelt. You have a very nice way of creating superb images with such an economy of words. I really enjoyed this. Eric ain't doin nothin at all just answerin the call |
`The train of thought`...wonderful read, here. Especially liking the warmth of the fire, the cold of the spray...I felt it all! So sad to think of those notes burning... Amaryllis |
