As is most often the case with my writing I get an image in my mind or sometimes just a feeling and it will not leave me alone until I write about it. It can be very disruptive at times. That being said, many years ago I saw a picture of an elderly man in a cemetery holding a balloon... this poem came from that image. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ The Ties That Bind… They told us it was leukemia She was four And with all the years gone by since then I return here again to celebrate her birthday I speak to her of things that have happened in the world since last time But only of the good things I lay upon the earth that separates us And softly sing her favorite songs Imagining her laughing as I do, her little hands clapping in time Her tiny voice filled with the simple joy of innocence Sometimes I fall asleep, sometimes I drift through daydreams I often think about what I would say when we finally meet again But to be honest, I know that for a long while There will only be tears on the other side of “Hello” I tell her I miss her, and I tell her I love her I ask her to give mommy kiss for me And I tell her that I will see her soon, God willing And though it’s been almost 60 years since she died Still he keeps me from her… So still I wait. Placing a flower on the grass I kiss the stone that marks where she lay And let go of a balloon, as a present to her Attached is a note, its words the same as every year “Happy Birthday Sarah, Daddy Loves You” |
