Old Soldier

His hands
Like leather
His face worn
And full of stories.

Eyes full of years
And suffering
But still twinkling.

He is a soldier
So he fights.
He will always fight.

But this battle
Is about over.
The bugle player
Watches him.

So he waits
For his kind bullet.

For life to do
What the war, the enemy,
couldn’t.

This is beautiful, poignant and affecting.

My grandpa was an old soldier - I asked once (as a girl) if war was scary, "he told me life is scary and war in comparison is pretty straight forward".  This poem made me remember that - and him.

It brought to mind a favored song by Elton John (lyrics profound as ever by Bernie Taupin)

"Talking Old Soldiers"

awesome work!

Life certainly can be a foe in ambush.  I like this poem a lot, and it also makes me recall the old soldiers in my family.  They take much less for granted, too, than those who have not been through such fiery trials.  I watch their hearts open to the sun like lotus petals....

I met a gentleman like that once, while sitting on a mall bench. He told me the story of his life and his days of serving with MacArthur.

Not
"couldn’t"

but
"didn't".

Thought provoking and touching write, dear Zeitgeist.

Soldiers are somehow always haunted by their tremendous experiences, no escaping those ghosts.

Love,
Margherita
