Reversed Charges

If I could call you up collect
I'd phone my heart to you
If you'd accept the charges
You'd get all my loving, too.

I could use direct dialing
But then, you wouldn't have a choice
Except to hang up on me
After you heard my voice.

I'd use the "speed dial' option
Hold my breath as your phone rings
And wait to hear your sweet voice
With all the joy it brings.

I'd plan what I'm going to tell you
Of, the promises I’ll keep
I hear a click, then hear you say,
"Please leave a message at the beep.”

You could have heard a pin drop
When I put the phone down
And it almost broke my heart
When I heard that "beeping" sound.

I'd dial "0", then your number
Then, when she came on the line
Say, "Please reverse the charges
If she'll take this heart of mine.".

She says, "There's no one at home."
I say, "Thank you, Operator.
Please try until you get her
And then, call me back, later.
