The Heart never Forgets – A ballad

It all began, one day at school, I just a boy of thirteen
Looking across the room I saw, the most beautiful eyes I’d ever seen
So big and dark they seemed to have a sparkle and a shine
Looking right back at me, it sent a shiver down my spine,

A feeling never felt before, why does my heart beat so fast
Filled with an attraction to that girl, I thought, did we have a past
I was loosing control of myself, my knees were going weak
Had to get away from her before I started to freak

It was too late, for by the time, I managed to look away
Her eyes were imprinted in my mind, in my heart that moment to stay
Is this what they call love, I thought, to know I am too young
For just one look into her eyes made us feel like we were one

I can’t explain what happened, I didn’t even understand
Never said an extra word to her nor tried to hold her hand,
All through our days in school she opted for resistance
Lest I get that feeling once again, I always kept a distance

We grew up, got out of school and went our separate ways
Once in a while a pair of eyes would light up my dull days
A racing heart beat would take me back to a moment in my past
I saw the face of that school girl t’was in my memory to last.

Time and tide wait for no man nor does the world stop turning
So on we went with our lives, job, marriage, children, learning
Learnt of life and love, of hurt and pain, paid for it with our tears
Since that faithful day in school, it had been twenty seven years

For all this time there still remained the question in my mind
The answer I could only get if that girl I could find
Was it just me or so did she feel that strong attraction
I wonder why my little heart caused the repelling reaction

A computer, the internet, logged on a networking site
A host of old and new friends, class mates and the like
We spoke of old times and memories, and how we moved apart
When suddenly a name I see, skipped a beat of my heart

Click ‘Yes’ to accept it said, another friend added to my list
Thoughts running through my head I had to clear the mist
Was she looking for the answer too or did she lay the past to rest
I’ve never been closer to finding out, like fulfilling a life long quest

We made small talk like all the rest by writing on the wall
Maybe a joke, a play on words, no mention of that day at all
When suddenly a little ‘Hi’ opened up a chat window
Is it time I thought to myself, I replied with ‘Hello’

We spoke of days gone by, why she left our corner of town
Told her of the missing years, how life takes you up and brings you down
She was with her husband, two little girls, a marriage filled with remorse
I was with my second wife, the first had opted for a divorce

Both had moved to foreign lands, trying to make another start
Wasn’t long before we found we were nine thousand miles apart
As we spoke we seemed to get closer, loosing one charade at a time
I couldn’t help but think to myself why wasn’t this woman mine

Must have been the safety of the distance that gave her the courage to say
‘Did you know, I had a crush on you, in our school going day’
My heart made a dash for the finish line that never seemed to come
My mind was in a spiral like a top that had just been spun

Why is she telling me now, what good can it possibly do
But I felt myself being taken over by a feeling I once knew
Do you remember the day our eyes met and I saw the Milky Way
I’ve never forgotten, she confessed, it still seems just like yesterday

My question was answered, my quest fulfilled, I had a smile on my face
But life has a way of throwing surprises, this one felt like a mace
Is this really happening, am I reading right, no this cannot be true
In the little chat window, her next line to me, said ‘I’ve always loved you’

As I opened the picture she just sent to me, I was
Once again faced with the most beautiful eyes, I ever did see
Still big and dark, now full of pain she’d been through, as I looked
Deep into them right down to her heart, I said ‘I love you too’

Falling into someone's eyes and recognizing a kindred soul is such a phenomena.  I enjoyed reading this because it reminded me of another love story I watched unfold with one of my children.  Life took them different directions, but I always get the feeling of unfinished business when they encounter one another now.  Deja vu.  Sweet story.
