Outside the myopic circle of light, the Range Rover crouches like some cubist sculptor's tribute to the humped beasts the vehicle seeks to replace. The stars, just inches overhead, act as ancient signposts to the fabled secrets of the Rub al Khali, "The Empty Quarter." The restless dunes huddle close, then sprint for the horizons of a very different reality. The sand, coaxed by the night breeze, sings its abraded song, of death, of renewal, of eternal change. From the "Realms of Gold" series "We are stardust: we are golden: and we've got to get ourselves back to the garden." --Joni Mitchell "Woodstock" |

So very impressive, must have been an incredibly fascinating experience! "The stars just inches above ..." Unforgettable moments, no doubt. You rendered this adventure with your usual mastery, dear Jim. Have a friend living in Abu Dhabi, will ask him if he has been to the "The Empty Quarter" and if you don't mind I will share your poem with him. Love, Margherita |

Midnitesun: Yes, there was certainly a magic there. Margherita: The Rub al Khali runs beyond the borders of the UAE into Saudi territory. There is a fable of a lost city there, a civilisation that has vanished without a trace. It is an incredibly focussing experience to be in the desert: a feeling of constant change, yet strangely unchanging. Thank you, Yann.
