what demons drive us
to make stupid gestures
hurting those we love
with cruel barbed words
laying bare their faults
as though I have
less than they, driving
a wedge between reconciliation
to salvage my pride
soothing the hurt of
angry words, quickly spoken
misunderstandings rife, reprisals swift
too late to retract
prostrate passion, pride proffered
now laying in tatters
