I wear my past like a wet cloth
It doesn't fit right
But it's mine
It covers most of my face,
Neck, arms and torso,
Legs, knees and ankles
But it won't stretch
Over busy hands or busy feet
I've gloves for those
And boots for those
And I wear them

The future's handled me well so far
It molds and mends and creases
And adorns my cloth with relics of both
Heavy and softer quotations
Relics that pull pull pull
And I see them
But busy hands being
Busy hands,
And busy feet being
Busy feet,
I still wear them

Once, during a late afternoon of heavy indulgence,
I looked at the cloth
And I looked at it
And I asked the obvious "why?", overlooking the meek "how?"
And from each strand of fabric spewed words which did divide
The cloth from the heart
The H from the E
The E from the A
The A from the R
The R from the T
And it said it

And as soon as the fabric had exhaled
The wet cloth became dry cloth
And now it itches
And it burns
And it rubs real hard
Like sleep through gritted teeth
Like the very physical qualities of shoving yesterday before a racing tomorrow
I am the owner of such a cloth
And it is mine
And I wear it
But I think I might be ready to share now

I read this 3 times before I felt I could respond properly.

Letting go of things you've kept close to yourself for so long is hard. But think of that morning when you can wake up, and bad memories fall from your body just as easily as the sheet falls to the floor.

One day!!

Anyway I loved this, lots and lots- straight to the Library!!
