THE OLD MAN KNEW IT ALL

A young boy in his pre school years
Thought all things his father knew,
Like all small boys he played with toys
While the many varied questions flew.

He asked about the rising sun,
The clouds, the stars, the moon,
Would he grow up to be a man,
It couldn’t come to soon.

The years they quickly slipped away,
Then one day Dad took him off to college,
It wasn’t long amongst that throng
That he thought he’d beat his dad for knowledge.

Then as he grew into his teens
He thought Dad didn’t know it all,
There were lots of things that he knew best
And from height Dad had to fall.

By the time he reached his mid-teen years,
He was smart and bright he knew,
There was very little he did not know
While poor old Dad did not have a clue.

And then by the time ten years had passed ,
He was married with children three,
He shouldn’t have taken out such a big bank loan,
Then he remembered, “Dad said that to me,”

But he was built of what it takes
And he struggled gamely through the years,
Till the house was his, and the kids left school,
All gained through sweat and tears.

Then when he reached the age of fifty five
He began to slacken speed,
And remembering things his Dad had said,
He found them very true indeed.

Another decade soon came and went
And old age began to call,
He realized on looking back
That his old Dad knew it all.

Profound, beautifully written and thought provoking, dear Lindsay.

We should give more credit to what we are told, but it seems if we don't make the personal experience, we always doubt!

Old people should be given the opportunity to share their wisdom and not be treated as useless weights. An afterthought.

Love,
Margherita

Aw, yes! The same applies to daughters and mothers. The older I got, the more I appreciated the wisdom of my mother!   I am now finding that to be also the case with my two daughters' perceptions of me as they mature.

Another wise penning from my wise Aussie Man!

There is much wisdom woven throughout these rhythmic lines Lindsay. So very true. I often wish we could have understood the importance of this when we were still teens ourselves. Much enjoyed.

Best wishes,
/Kit

The lucky ones learn this lesson before it's to late and the parents can finally know that they are understood and appreciated. Fine write, Lindsay.

Dear friend, I have told my kids to learn from my mistakes, they told me they didn't think they would live that long. (smartalliks) I have often thought, if I could teach them just a few things that I have learned, they would be better prepared to face the future.  They didn't want to listen until they had kids of their own, then they start asking the same questions.

People that think they know it all, are really annoying to those of us that do. Eh?

Very fine poem.

I must say that it was very gratifying to see such prominent poets names in the comments this morning, so to ARH, Esha, Margherita, Linda, Kit, Ida and Tracey
thank you dear friends for your very kind remarks. I love you all, God bless.

And Tracey I loved this line from you that brought on a big smile.

People that think they know it all, are really annoying to those of us that do. Eh?

Lindsay,

This poem is special to me.  I didn't have a relationship with my father that I often look on with a sense of pride.  But, he was intelligent and did have some thoughts that have remained with me in a good way.  If he were alive, I'd share this poem with him.

Love,

I often find myself remembering things my parents said but I think they really just battled through life like I have.  We do learn a thing or two as we grow older but seldom do we learn from others' mistakes.  It seems like we're meant to make our own.  Enjoyed the read, Lindsay.
