‘Daddy come home..’

Akneel beside a quilt thrown bed,
her lap a loveworn one eyed bear;
A barefoot girl hung down her head,
her tiny hands pressed tight in prayer;
And ‘pon that pane in pinks and red,
a birthday card addressed just... ‘Claire..’

While down her cheek a living pearl,
slow fled one tight shut infant eye;
To wet a single wayward curl,
set black as any midnight sky;
And from the lips this tender girl,
a plaint to set a stone to cry.

“Please tell my daddy, i’ll be good.”
From trembling lips, a whispered plea;
“I know he’d come home if he could,
to care for mummy, Joe and me;
And say I’m sorry, if you would,
I didn’t eat up all my tea...”

“Please tell him that I’ll always keep,
his picture on my bedside chest;
And every night before I sleep,
a goodnight kiss upon it rest;
Then ‘fore into my bed I creep,
a final prayer; one dear request.”

“I don’t know why he went away,
or doesn’t love us any more;
Why mummy says he couldn’t stay,
and cries behind her bedroom door;
But send my daddy home some day,
I promise not to ask for more..”

Then laying down that careworn bear,
on silent feet across the floor;
The card clutched close her raven hair,
she quiet oped the dresser drawer;
And ‘pon the six that rested there,
with tender care... She placed one more.

How extremely poignant!

The pain is so deeply felt and the situation sadly so frequent around this world in war in so many places.

An exquisite write.

Love,
Margherita
