Long ago the sergeant walked in and yelled, “Rise my beauties and shine We are going out on a mission. Did you want to live forever?” I wanted to tell him that forever was not my expectation, but a little longer would be fine, but those smartass sergeants they think they are so very clever. So long ago, the days were hot and humid, and full of terror. We walked the trails hunting for the wily foe. Hoping he would accidently reveal himself: make a fatal error, so that we could dispatch him to a better place. But we hoped even more, if truth be told, that he went a different way. We were not heroes, none of us thought ourselves an ace. We were hoping mostly that there was no hell to pay. Our memories were of driving hot rods to the beach, accompanied by babes dressed in swim attire. But at that time our past was beyond our reach. All we could do is haul our loads and perspire. |

A very vivid snippet of life in the army. ~ Often under intolerable conditions. ~ The danger, the 'fear factor', being away from 'civilization'~ home, family and friends, the regimentation, the absence of simple amenities, oppressive heat ~ or cold, sleeplessness, hunger, orders/orders/orders. It takes a tremendous amount of courage, strength, determination to withstand all of that ~ and so much more. You surely have many tales to tell ~ and I would like to read them!!! EA |
