Don't open that door again.
There's nothing
but painful memories
in that space.
Can't you see it on her face?
Nothing but painful memories...
and cobwebs.

I've worked at keeping the door to painful memories shut for quite some time, now. Every now and then, something happens to bring them back.

Sometimes doors need to be locked forever
when all they hold behind them is pain.

You've said this succinctly, Ida,
with great impact.
It seems you are able to reduce the truth
to just a few words. That takes talent combined with wisdom and compassion.
~thanks for another library gift~

The observant, compassionate you, would be able to see the pain on her face.

~ and the wise you advises her to not open the door again!

I've thrown the keys away to a few locked doors in my own life.

You never fail to hit a homer with your down-to-earth, no-nonsence writing on the human life experience.

Love you, my dear Ida Belle!

I think many of us have doors like that one.  I like the poem and I think that some doors are left forever closed.

such is a poem,

I agree, dear Ida, painful memories need to be dealt with ... and a well locked door gives tranquility.

Wise and well said!

Love,
Margherita

Thank you all for reading and commenting.
I wrote this poem after listening to someone asking my daughter rather probing questions about her sister who passed away.

I found your words to be a goodly provocation.

I too have closed the door
And successfully denied past pain
And unhappiness,
Until I was reminded,
Or remembered,
And then closed the door again:
It never happened.

But, past, present, future,
Who has so much time,
They can afford
To abandon chunks of their lives?

I wrote an explanation for this poem because I thought it might be misunderstood. I was right.

apologies if this seems trite or you didn't want further comments as it's not my intention to upset you in any way.
