Raven Consideration

I wondered what that raven was thinking
As he swaggered around the grocery store parking lot
He chuckled and chortled like a dirty old man
As he eyed the shoppers and checked out their goods

His wings wore the paint of green fields
And the hue of blue skies before the smoke settled
Yet, he looked unkempt as if he had far too much to do
And too little time to worry about preening
Maybe he was too busy posturing and preaching

I wondered why his look made me nervous inside
His gaze mocked me as he looked through me
And beyond me as if I am as transparent as I sometimes feel
He flew away and laughed as if knowing

Like all ravens know –
That he is smarter than the average me

LOL! I enjoyed reading this. You think that bird was smarter than you, huh! I doubt that!

this 'write' is very fine ...

I especially like:

"His wings wore the paint of green fields
And the hue of blue skies before the smoke
  settled
Yet, he looked unkempt as if he had far
  too much to do
And too little time to worry about preening
Maybe he was too busy posturing and
  preaching"

much applause for this 'penning' !!

Black birds have been always a favorite of mine. I'm not sure why.

Enjoyed this poem, very much!

Yo dear Alison,

I remember the ravens in India.  They were always big, and noisy.

You captured my feeling about ravens in the "chuckling and chortling like a dirty old man..." and "mocked me.." I really enjoyed it. Does anyone ever see them positively? I am curious about a poem about ravens from that point of view.

"The Moving Finger writes, and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line.."

Sue,

Yep, I do think so.  He's not smarter than I in all ways, but he is smarter than I in some ways.

Love ya, darlin'.

Thank you, dear Lindsay.  He's a clever bird - and has his own intelligence.  I don't think I am not smart - I was writing what he was thinking.

Karou,

I know what you mean.  I love the ravens and magpies the best of all.

Thank you for reading this one.

Alison

-

Bobby,

Maybe that's why I love them -- they are funny and noisey!

Love,
Alison

-

Callista,

I think you misunderstood - I love ravens.  I was just writing it from the perspective of his attitude as I saw him.  I am one of those people who break bags of dog food when it is -40 so I can feed them in the Sam's parking lot.  Of course, I get the pleasure of watching them too.

I did a haiku and photograph (the picture is one I took this last winter) that you might like.

I just love this, Alison. I find crows fascinating and you are right they are very
smart. One Easter I hid plastic eggs for my kids with candy, little toys and trinkets. Some of the eggs were clear on one end so a crow saw a little gold necklace inside, flew down, pecked it open and flew away with the necklace.

Ida,

I love that story.  The ravens in one small town here in Alaska learned how to strip the rubber off the windshield wipers. People didn't know it was gone until they went to turn on their wipers ... Foiled again!

Gotta love the ravens!

I adore your poems about animals, you have a special sensitivity to observe them and understand them, dear Alison.

Hehe. I loved your interpretation of the raven.

I often wear black leather trousers and a longcoat, and I have a penchant for shiny things.

Does that make me a bit of a raven? :p

If a window wasn't there to keep her inside, my Kate would be giving the ravens around my place an attitude adjustment. *S* So when one tilts his head and looks at me with superiority, I remind him I'm smart enough to close the door between him and the cat! LOL

I enjoyed this very much... and am glad to know I'm not the only one perused and found lacking. LOL

(gives a little smirk) Yep, I bet most birds know more about what's on our minds than we are even consciously aware often! How I wish I had wings and piercing aerodynamic eyes!

(giggles) This is such a wonderful slice of life you've depicted ever so well in this poem here, my friend, and all too persuadable too given it takes place in something that often appears mundane...........a grocery store parking lot! (huggies) Fabulous words as always, hope you had a great weekend dear Alicia, yay!

Dear Alison,

           Crow, by Ted Hughs.

also

http://www.thebeckoning.com/poetry/hughes/hughes.html
I walked out the door the other day.  A crow was cawing repeatedly at the top of a tree; which one, I couldn't tell.  I turned around and turned around until I thought I had the crow spotted.  I raised one finger and pointed.  The cawing stopped, and the crow flew off.
Now the crow returns every few days, with friends, and the game continues.  We are all pleased with ourselves.

     I enjoyed the poem.

Bob,

What a lovely surprise!  Thank you for taking the time to read and comment.  I'll have to pick up Crow.  I have read some of Ted Hughes poetry before and have enjoyed it.  I'll have to read in more depth.
