Dancing For The Groceries

Jaded aprehensions
Sufforcating Fears
Un-godly hangovers
Blood stricken tears

Shallow little hearts
A world that doesn't care
Skimpy lacy underwear
She's got vomit in her hair

Tattoo's and needle marks
Black eyes and heavy hearts
Short skirts and outfits
Pretty, selfish tarts

But i'm not like the rest of them
Hell I'll never be
I'm just dancing for the groceries
Even though it's killing me

_____

I stand and wonder what she's doing
I'm miles away and she'd be in bed
If only i could watch her sleeping
While i paint my lips bright red

I wish i could call to say i loved her
But the boss says no calls go out or in
I put on a dress that might be pretty
If I didn't have to take it off again

They tell me that i have no future
Seems good looks they never last
But there's money for the taking
And the time well it goes fast

The music's loud and they drink water
My name tonight i can't recall
They all cheer for the single mother
I just smile and stare at the wall

I take the stage all dressed up
In sequins and pretty laces
The dj plays my song again
And I dance for all the faces

I'm just daincing for the groceries
Hell I'm dancing for the rent
I'm dancing for the credit card
That it seems I've already spent

But smiling while i dance
is just the price i have to pay
to make my daughter healthy
I don't know any other way

I'm just dancing for the groceries.....

Oh. My. God. I don't normally say that, but in this case it's appropriate. I started reading your poem and I couldn't stop reading. I couldn't stop at all. I'm finding it hard to... find words that I can say. That was amazing! I...I... WOW. I am completely stunned. The story is so sad and told so undeniably well. Thank you for writing this.

Amelia looks gorgeous just like her mother.
It was no surprise to me when your poem amazed me with its beauty and sorrow. You know how to tell a story and you do it well. Keep writing hun and know that we're all here for you.

Awe, Jess.   Times can be hard but always remember who you are, and what you want to accomplish. That way you'll never loose yourself in the world.
This is a great poem by the way. Library for sure.

Love you and miss you!!!

This stopped me in my tracks, it was so sad but such a beautiful story of devotion and love.  And Amelia is gorgeous!

What a beautiful daughter you have!  When I was in University my roommate danced for the groceries too, and she is now a doctor at a very famous hospital in the United States.  Sometimes we just do what we have to do to fulfill our dreams.  Dreaming big is good!

This was very well done.
