I want these words to work. I want them to fit. I need them to help. But they don't. And the fear-- My hand writes faster, a desperate slave used to create for a cruel master. And I don't-- My pen scribbles down scrambled words in a vain attempt to slow the-- My mind screams; frustrated at my hand because it mangles my heart's dreams. But it does not matter, because now-- they all burn. The flames reach up and lick my skin, my eyes begin to water. But still my stubborn hand wrings out these words it does not understand in stupid hope that the fire will die if it can just write down the right words; but-- The words soften just increase the lie, fueling the flame that grows hotter and stronger. Blisters bubble as the fire runs along my skin. The smell slaps my face, burning flesh and hair yet-- I do not stand up, I do not cry out. I just sit here and burn, the flames engulfing me. My scorched skin cracks, blood trickling fast and free down the shattered remains of blackened skin. The blue opal ring; a glittering circle of ice fights the fire like a hopeless old king. Still-- As my fingernails split from the heat it reveals the raw, red meat that is unprotected against the radiating flames. My hand scribbles down these words. And so I sit here, my body utterly motionless except for my frantic hand and so-- I burn. The hot fumes scorch my nose as I breath in ever so slowly. My lungs sting as the retched air burns cruely, infused with the potent scent of burning blood that attacks my soft organs. There is no use in crying, yet still my eyes swell. The tears boil down my face, the salt stabbing & stinging my charred cheeks. The water evaporates with a sizzle, leaving behind a trail of salt; white against my charcoaled skin. My lips crack, the flames kissing the peeling surface of the withered, silent creatures. All the while my hand feeds the fire with these useless words. And then-- in one last, desperately hopeless act, my hand tears the page apart, shredding the words. And-- that is that. The crumpled paper catches fire and adds to my burns. And I let it. I lean back, my hand completely still. I feel the hot, hateful fire burn away all I am and I smile. The movement causes my lips to crack and a piece falls off, burning like a hot, smoldering coal. The split grows and all the lies holding me together burn away. With a small gasp-- I try to close my fingers, but my hand simply-- When I attempt to close my eyes they-- As I try to force a breath my body-- it shatters. And all that is left of me is this steaming pile of ash. And my hand-- no longer can it write these words. Thank you for reading, I know it is a bit long, but it is something I can not shorten. Also, this poem means a lot to me and it took quite a bit of effort and courage to finally post it, so all kind words are very greatly appreciated. |

Hello, Sarah Grace. I thought I'd not be back here again, but there's something about this place I can't resist. Maybe it's because of the beauty I see in poets like you, and these others who blister the page with fire. I'm in a better state of mind, in case your caring heart wondered. It was a long fight. This poem just scorched the page. Such detail and description. I ache with the subject of this writing whose perspective you've portrayed so very well. Nothing disappointing in coming here to see your scathing script. I told you from the first, you are as good as anyone here,if not yet quite as refined as some. And everyone here is so very very good at this that that says much. Refinement comes in time. Your eloquence can only grow. ·´~`·»Garapan«·´~`· |
