Michael

How far back shall we turn
to find the creature
which lashed the creature
he thought he yearned
to be into him?  Out of him
it came, its pallid, cloven angles,
its squeaks and gibbers,
jives and jerks, sluicing
him into the arms of the world.
This is what comes of listening
to snakes; of eating the changeling apple.

Indeed, it did seem that he was at times
among the claws of some devil, indeed.

It did seem he held something fearful inside him.  Perhaps being it was the only way he thought he could scare it away.

A thoughtful poem.
