I remember...
She was pretty once,
but I have a hunch
that the smoking and drinking
have taken their toll
and she doesn't seem to realize
that she has grown old.
She conducts herself
in a young woman's way,
though she has more wrinkles
than a pure-bred sharpei.
A petite little thing
who has seen better days
but has no intention
of changing her ways.
When her husband was able
to pry her off his arm
he left her for a lady
of less obvious charms.
She still pines for the husband
because she can't see
how happy he is just to be free.
Now, she has become
a most interesting case.
The mere presence of a man
puts a smile on her face.
Any man will do,
It's all the same
When a man appears,
She forgets your name.
No need to finish
that conversation anyway.
She really doesn't have a lot to say.
Just observing...
Keepin' it all to myself,
There's nothing more pathetic
than a man-pleasing woman
who's been left on the shelf.

~ and what an "observer" you be! I always find it fascinating to see the world through your eyes!

A vivid portrayal of a very sad scenario which I too, have witnessed.

Love your writing, Dear Ida! ~ and you!

Exactly the kind of person I don't want to be when I grow up.
Self esteem is such a fragile state of affairs, it depletes
the heart and soul, and strips it bare.   You wrote this so well
and the message comes across loud and clear.

Sadly, this~

If you want to have any kind of lasting relationship this (in my opinion) is just the kind of woman not to be. I think this one will probably hit a nerve with some women who actually think that men like clinging women who publicly adore(smother) them. I knew this person since we were young. I always told my daughters, "Watch what Mary does and don't do that."

Enjoyed the read, Ida.  I know someone like that too but I do in a way admire the fact that she knows what she wants and she goes for it.  Discernment sometimes takes a long time to learn but then again some people never learn and I suppose that's alright for them.

One thing I have learned (and I'm not young), is that when you set out to please a man, you always end up getting hurt.
