East Wind is a monster
roaring through the gorge.
Mountains of ice and snow
the East Wind does forge.

Ice to dance old lady feet
in a dervish whirled jig.
Snow on sidewalks needs
a snappy shovel to dig.

Cold bites hapless ears
that lose the warmth of a hat.
Snow leaves the world a bumpy
ride, no bit of ground left flat.

Cars are stalled, freeways close.
Red appears on every single nose.
Mailman can't do appointed route,
leaving neighborhoods to do without.

Watery eyes view a blurry scene
as wind tugs scarves around necks.
Streets are snowball battlefields,
where sit snowed-in car wrecks.

Christmas blooms icy and bright,
not worried about storms or ice.
For Christmas brings a glow
of peace that is without price.

Reading your poem makes me very happy to be living in sunny South Africa but Christmas does indeed bring a glow no matter where.  Sadly though it's sometimes only for a day.  Enjoyed the feel of cold through your words.

Thanks, Helen - we are just snowed in to no end here in Portland. Usually we barely even have a skiff each year. But this big storm came and nothing is open, accessible, or normal! I long for a bit of South African weather here.

A perfect portrait of a snowy day. Very well done, to my nonpoetic taste.

Sarah, thanks for the wishes and I wish right back that this new year will be prosperous and maybe our new president
will turn this country around a bit.
