There's a buckin' barrel on rotted ropes
Still hanging in the yard...
And every time I look at it-
I have to swallow hard...

His pictures hanging on the walls-
Still bring me lot's of pain...
They're all we have to keep us sane-
Ever since we lost our Blaine.

He grew up with a happy grin-
And longing to be grown.
So he could follow rodeo,
And make it on his own.

Five foot, eight- lean as a whip...
An ego ten feet tall.
Broad of shoulder, lean of hip,
He longed to ride them all.

They say he could have been the best-
But now we'll never know...
A fighting brahma took his life,
At a small, west Texas show.

Twenty-one and crazy-
Just starting in this life...
He left a year old marriage,
And a three month pregnant wife...

But sometime of an evening,
I can almost hear his voice-
Saying, Daddy, don't you cry for me-
You know it was my choice.

John,

This is gut-wrenching.  How could one not cry for a child taken like that.  Maybe there's consolation knowing that he died doing what he loved.  I don't know.  I am glad he has a child who is part of him - it's like part of him remains with the child.

Thank you for reposting this poem.  I have not read it before.

Very sad, John. People will fulfill their destiny no matter what.

I think you've just described most rodeo cowboys. *S* And though most don't face the ultimate heartbreak, it's still a profession of hidden tears.

Beautiful, touching tale you've woven!

John that is one of the most poignant, heart wrenching poems that I have ever read,

So beautifully written, it certainly touches
the heart strings. Thank you for sharing.
