I hear his voice in ev'ry drop of laughter
And feel his presence long since gone
My lips purse to greet the moment
Only to realize I've been there many times before

The smiles, the miles between our hearts, our minds, our souls
We share like a morning cup of coffee
In our fav'rite shop of chocolate cake doughnuts
Reading separate sections of the same morning's news

Wiping our mouths with cheap paper napkins
Tasting the flakes as if to savor each one's fall
From the state of yeast-filled glaze
Upon our finger-tips to our lips

We touch our tongues and smile to enjoy
The ritual of pastries shared by a father and his boy

Awesome! Loved it... I also love doughnuts...

Yo Steavenr,

This poem has a nice idea.

I once O.D.ed on doughnuts.  I won't do it again.

viking,
thank you for liking it...and, really, who doesn't like doughnuts?

hal,
appreciate you reading and commenting...thanks

Bill,
I changed the ending...glad you liked this one...and the chocolate covered glazed ones are definitely my favorites...yummm

Bobby,
I have two grandsons (Jack & Bobby).  They are coming in from Europe this Christmas and we have already planned our doughnut orgy (home-made, hand-dipped, in home-made chocolate frosting--we plan to follow your lead and OD on them) thanks for commenting

It is those happy moments that have the tears coursing down my face, Steaven.  I am sad that your father is long since gone, but happy that you have such wonderful memories.

If all father/son relationships were like this, the world would be a much better place!

Steaven, you wrote of your's and your father's closeness with warmth ~ and reverence...

You were a fortunate son ~ and he a fortunate father.

I remember some times like these but mine weren't doughnuts.  We gorged on country apple pie with cheese melted over it along with the coffee.  Thanks for taking me back to wonderful memories.  Wonderful write to showcase the meaningful parts of life.

FNG,
food, family, fun, and fellowship--always have tried to live by that credo...glad you could with your mum

Owl,
I lost my father long before he passed...life and circumstances dictated distance between us...he is probably closer now than in the past...all because of wonderful memories we shared when we could

Linda,
you were right on every count, and I appreciate your sensitive and kind remarks...thank you

Helen,
how right you are and how privileged you make me feel...thank you & so glad you enjoyed

Mark,
I firmly believe it is not necessarily the certain food, it is the certainty with which you remember the sharing.  You, too, were fortunate in your wonderful memories.  Thank you for your kind comments.

Vandana,
so glad you enjoyed...thank you for reading and then, thanks again for commenting.  I appreciate it.

Precious times, perfect treasures.
As much a treat to read, as the sweet taste of glaze...or knowing it has become a tradition to savor.

How absolutely charming and profound, dear Steaven! Such beautiful memories of closeness. I experienced this like a movie and felt the emotion flooding me.

Memories such as these make the precious bundle of tangible treasures we always carry with us.

Memories of our fathers. So precious. I remember long walks to grandfather's house. My short legs skipping to keep up with my father's long strides. I was so happy and proud as I grew enough to be able to keep pace. I still carry  his long stride and purposful walk. Thank you for your share."late"

just recently my youngest daughter discovered that her older (and very proper) sister called me Daddy.  I just love to hear someone use that special term of endearment...thank you for your nice comment

My tounge loves doughnuts, my belly wants two,
My wife thinks they are fattening,

My butt does too!!

I know the story is not about doughnuts, but I couldn't resist.

Lovely sentiment on the rest of the poem
