My mind’s been kind of driftin’ Down a long and winding trail. To the music of coyotes- And the flight of Bob-white quail… To the sounds of leather creaking- From my pony’s gentle sway… And the prairie dust a risin’ As we go our lonely way… I think of saddle partners- Who have long been dead and dirt- The aching empty feelin’ Their departures sure did hurt… Then again of youthful romance- But, alas, ‘twas just a dream, And a country boy’s daydreams- Vanish like a wisp of steam… Then the years of brutal labor- From barely see, to cain’t- Banked the fires of fancy dreamin’ One cain’t be somethin’ that he ain’t… I remember childhood heroes- Roy, Gene, and Lash Larue… How they always seemed so certain, Never doubting what to do. But it never was that simple- In the choices that I made… Like how to raise my children, And the way I plied my trade… Looking back, I’m not ashamed of- The cowboy path I chose- Though the road was often bumpy, And it had it’s high and lows… I still dread the chill of winter- And I love the blush of spring- If I had it to do over… Why, I wouldn’t change a thing.
