summer solstice long since past
sun-drenched dreams dissolve away
furlowed mind-rays could not last
while mem'ries warm begin to fray

the cool of autumn dispels the heat
and broad-leafed trees begin to fade
while waterfowl their paths retreat
and disappears the back yard shade

a fire in the fireplace begins to burn
a blanket warm its arms surround
the windows close, the wind they spurn
a true cool breeze cannot be found

for summer has not gone away
it has only come inside to play

There you go!!
It's pretty what you wrote, but your ending says it all.

"a blanket warm its arms surround"

"They" are so clever, making the warmth of summer last.  A playfully romantic piece, well written.

Enjoyed!

Blues,
thank you for your niceness...and for liking the ending...thanks

Janette,
I guess I don't recognize it as romantic, but thank you none-the-less...always hard to see your work as others see it...but, then again, that's what I love about poetry...how it speaks to each reader differently

Alison,
you've been generous with your comments...thank you...I appreciate it

And so the seasons change... Nice write.

Very lovely. I am inside playing. You?

Autumn is my favorite time of year.  We do carry the summer sunshine indoors... I believe it is the flame in the fireplace til spring.
Enjoyed this very much.

Callista,
thanks for stopping by, but trying to get out as much as possible now...the South is magnificent this time of year...the weather is actually perfect...but, anyway, glad you liked it

TD,
it is hard not to love the romance of fall...like your idea of the fireplace fire holding summer until spring...thank you for your nice thoughts

yann,
thank you...so glad you found a nugget...I just love your European flavoring on 'gold digger'.  I only mean it in a good way (my son-in-law is European, with English as a second language and he always provides us with word gems...which serve well to flavor our conversations) thank you kindly...
