Somewhere in the background
a twelve string is strumming,
blending notes of scavenging birds,
wind dancing in trees.

Brightly colored rustling leaves
blow about the yard
without a care
'bout where they'll end up.

Thick heavy clouds hang
like a dark saturated blanket
of doom and gloom,
suffocating the sunlight.

So why
am I smiling?

Hi, this is really interesting with the last question that interferes with the rest of the poem and makes consider it with astonishment, I will have to read it again....Thanks for the clever write...

you're smiling
because you can
and because of the surrounding beauty within the sorrow
and vice versa

smiling...why indeed?...

it has something to do with a grand-elusive quantity called multi-nested core optimism!

applause for this 'penning'!

Maybe you are smiling because you know the tune to which the leaves are strummng the 12 string.  Much enjoyed.  Reminded me of myt "Aria" 12 string I had years ago.

Because you felt one with nature and its beauty, even under a hidden sun.

Love this much, dear Kacy!

Midnitesun - I believe you're smiling because that 12 string is strumming...

What a keeper, Kacy girl!  Why are you smiling?  Well, I think because you don't like the alternative.
