The Drifter and Me By Paul Wilson Going my way I said to the old man standing there looking at me I suppose I could he said if you don’t mind the company The old man climbed up in the truck cab and thanked me Slowly we began to talk and he told me his life story Before long we were sharing memories from our past He bummed a smoke as the sun faded fast As his story goes… back in sixty three he was hiking cross country A young man of twenty one chasing the wind… being free We stopped for the night to sleep parking under a big old oak tree We slept in the bed of the truck as the moon drifted by quietly About three in the morning I woke up to this strange sound I searched everywhere but the old man was nowhere to be found When I got to the nearest town I stopped and told the sheriff my story He asked if I had stopped for the night under and old oak tree Yes I said as we drove back to the scene there I said that’s the tree The sheriff told me back in sixty three someone hung a drifter from this tree I couldn’t believe what I just heard who was this old man where did he go Was this all just a bad dream I guess I will never know ~~To share my poems with you is to share my heart with you~~ |

What an intriguing write, dear Paul! Maybe this friendly ghost just needed a prayer for the peace of his soul. Beautifully written, I enjoyed it. Love, Margherita |
