"Brother of My Heart" I miss the times we had, my friend, I thought you'd be here to the end Alas, Fate had a different plan, And now you've gone away The brother of my heart you've been Through light and dark, through thick and thin I miss you everyday, 'tis true, And will until the end Inseparable we were, it seemed, Our minds so full of grandiose dreams That never came to pass, my friend, But in the future may For though our paths have split for now I know someday, some place, somehow Again we'll dream those childhood dreams Far grander than before! AMdG "My candle burns at both ends; it will not last the night; but ah, my foes, and oh, my friends--it gives a lovely light!" -Edna St. Vincent Millay |

Oh, this has such a tremendous melancholy in it, that I have a heavy heart after reading it. Beautifully poignant. Love, Margherita |

Once again, thanks to everyone for your comments. This poem is very special to me, and it means a lot that I was able to convey everything I was feeling when I wrote it. My best friend Dan moved away a couple years back, to live in Tennessee with a girl he met on the internet. He left without telling anyone, not even his own family, and we didn't even know he wasn't coming back until about a week after he'd left. It hurt a lot. I spent a lot of time being angry at him; you have to understand, we were inseparable, more like brothers than friends. My parents even jokingly referred to him as "the good son." I didn't talk to him for weeks, and when we finally did end up talking (over the internet, of course) all I could do was tell him how angry I was. Well, a couple years have gone by, and we are on good terms again. He comes up to visit twice a year with his girlfriend (who is amazing, by the way) and we all hang out together. I still struggle with anger with him at times, but I'm doing my best to overcome it. This poem was a big step in putting that anger behind me. Once again, thanks to you all for reading it! You are all amazing writers, and even more, amazing people!
